Evaluation

The visual communication and message meets the needs in this project by showing well what the piece is about. The illustration that I have done links well to the theme and I think that I have portrayed it well within the text also. All three parts of this project that I have done communicate well and to show this I also put them in public advertising spots where I thought they would fit well and I think I succeeded in this part. The way that I think it didn’t meet the brief is that I chose not to do the whole POS kit that Triumph would typically use. Although I think that they way I have done the kit works just as well with communication.  The strengths in my piece I think are the illustration pieces, because I think it’s different to most bra shop advertisements. A lot of bra companies have photographs of ladies in sets from the shop, which I think works but I thought something different would be beneficial for my design. The weaknesses that my pieces have are the small details in which it took me to get the correct typeface. I wanted to keep the designs similar to what Triumph already design. The way that I think that my POS kit could be mis-read or mis-understood is that the drawing might come across as not as much to do with a bra fitting service, you need to read the small sections of writing to know what they are about. The way that this piece could be improved or developed is that I could do some more illustration to the ladies. I really like the simplicity of them, but other people might not get it so soon, as everyone’s perception of art.

My time keeping in this task I found quite difficult. I became quite ill so there was a lot of time wasted at the start of the project. I found that after I felt better I picked up pace quite well and managed to get on without hesitation. I divided my time up well with each task. Making sure that I had a good amount of knowledge on what it was I wanted to do. My analysis of the brief was good, as for this task I needed to look at 5 briefs before I chose which one to take forward there was a lot that I needed to take in. I think that this brief analysis was good and I understood what was being asked of me. My research was also good; I did a lot of advertising research and also some information on Maslow pyramid theory, which helped me decide where the adverts lay. The parts of the project that I enjoyed the most were the designing. I did a lot of illustrations for this and that’s what I like doing most. I like to link drawing and digital together as I think it makes apiece more interesting and personal to a client that the piece was made especially for them. The part of the project that I enjoyed the least was the deciding which brief to do. I found it hard, as there was so many. The times that I work best was when I knew the direction I wanted to take the project in I was happy to sit and get on with it for hours on end. The areas that inspired me were looking at other adverts; I think this is the best way to get inspiration. Looking at the Triumph website also was good because I can look at the poses and images that they use for advertising.

Ethical design

Within Ethical design charging to design for a charity I think is acceptable, I believe that there should be a cap on how much should be charged but at the end of the day, people got to earn a living. However, if the designer is well off and well known then by principal, there shouldn’t be any earnings. This might seem like a weird way of thinking, but it works the same with celebrities. They wouldn’t be able to give as much money as they do to charity if they hadn’t earnt a huge amount previously, the same goes for designers, so if a charity job is all they have, that job is still a job that should be paid. When there is a job that comes up that a designer doesn’t agree with then I think there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed. The designers name will be on the campaign and if the topic is a touchy subject then this could jeopardise their whole career.

I think that designers are part of the process of selling inappropriate good or of promoting ‘bad’ companies, because they are making the designs that make people want to buy these products or be apart of that company. A designer should refuse to be apart of the advertisement of something they personally do not agree with or something that is well known to be a bad company or doing. An issue that I would refuse to be involved with is animal cruelty, politics that I don’t agree with, fur trade and false advertising, eg. a drink that says it will do this.. but has a huge amount of sugars or things that are at the moment making people obese which at the moment is causes a lot of trouble to our NHS system, costing us more more in taxes, it all links together causes the reasons for this.

Unpaid internships I don’t agree with. I think that from a students point of view it’s hard as we need to earn money to live, so we can’t afford to do an internship unless we have parents that are happy to support us finically. We wouldn’t have time for a part time job, doing both would be possible if you are willing and have the energy to work 7 days a week. But is that enough to live on? No, its not. I think that an internship should be paid at least minimum wage, and if minimum wage is being paid, then travel should be subsidised to be able to do this. If you don’t have experience within internships then it is almost impossible to get a job you want. The design industry is a vicious circle, an exciting circle but very hard to make yourself known without the references.

Designs and development

Here I am going to show a few designs that I have done for the Triumph brief.
These first few designs that I have done I have chosen to draw them by hand rather than a vector drawing. I think that looking at some research from Triumph and looking at their swing tickets I would like to base  my ideas more on their 'Shape Sensation' ticket, which is more illustrative and personal I find.

A5 handouts designs.

I have done three ideas here that I have done a few basic bits on which I think would work well and would be quite eye catching.

This idea that I had i wanted to use things that actually make up a bra. I thought that it could be a good touch to make it more linked and fitting to the idea. I hand stitched this bra using a tiny needles and thin cotton. I think that it came out quite well but it was very time consuming and for the amount of bras that I want to use on one piece of advertising I don't know if I would be able to do this in the time that I have to complete. The text here that I have used is a stamp set that I have. I really like this effect but again it was quite time consuming finding all the letters, it was a similar set up to the old way of type.

I really like the colour in this idea. I know that Triumph traditionally haven't used much colour apart from their trademark red but i think by using these colours that are close to red in the colour wheel work well and make it more fun and will attract a younger audience. I have just hand written the text line in this idea, it doesn't work well so I would change that if I decided to take this idea forward.

Watercolour paint, dripped down a page, I drew over it as when I was dripping the colour down the page I saw places in this where I thought a ladies body would go. I love this, I love the colour that has been put together naturally/

This image I also really liked. I got inspiration from images online on underwear shops. After I drew the outline I thought that it looked way too plain, boring and simple so I drew all the other lines inside of the body. I think that it's interesting but I'm not sure that it fits well to this project. It looks quite sinister like, and I think that the lines look almost like muscle tissue from a body knowledge book.

I draw this free hand from an already made Triumph poster. I thought the posture used here oozed confidence and so that's why I chose to draw this one. I think that it could make a very interesting image by putting it into Photoshop.

This was just a quick line drawing of a midriff. I don't think there is anything particularly interesting about this one, as it's plain and not much going on.

I wanted to experiment more with techniques of drawing as I knew when I first looked at the brief  I wanted to do some kind of illustration. I think that this works better in real life. When it's been photographed I feel it has lost it's magic but the hand-stitch way it has about it. Although I would like to create this all by hand, time is limiting my work and so I wouldn't be able to do what I wanted with the time scale I have.

Here is a selection of drawings that I have done here for my designs. I am going to experiment with these and see what I come up with. I think with this its best for me to see what I come up with as I go along. These images are all inspired from the Triumph website, I did this to keep the Triumph theme in there.

Now I am going to put here some of the designs that I have come up with from my illustrations:

I am so pleased with this outcome. I am going to develop it a little more, changing a few parts, changing the layout so that  I can place some text in here. I really like the way that the illustration has turned out here. Being able to change the colour of the underwear set I think makes this piece so much more interesting.

Getting the right typeface is important for this brief. The company uses a certain typeface and so that is what you would instantly put the two together with. At first I thought this might be Century Gothic but after doing an experiment it was obvious that this wasn't right.
The next thing I did to try and identify the typeface used on their advertisement I went on to What the Font. (http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/).
I cut part of the image down that YCN gave me in the project pack, with just the text. This is what I put through:

I tried to do upload this 4 times and each time it said that there was an error.

The typeface used here was called Passion Sans. I downloaded this font from www.dafont.com. Going through as many fonts as I could this was a close match to the traditional Triumph typeface.

This is what I have chosen to have as my final. I am really pleased with the outcome of this.  The hand drawn lady is what I feel makes it beautiful. It seems more personal and girly. I have made this within Photoshop and InDesign, making the image edited in Photoshop, changing the colouring of her underwear to what I think suited the flyer. The pink and red I think linked well to what is going on now which is Valentine's day. But I think that it could easily be used all year round as a colour scheme, as the colours I think will attract most ladies.

After finding the typeface for this I changed it all slightly from the final draft above.
The typeface used in this and with Triumph is:
Helvetica Neue - UltraLight
Now this has been identified, I am going to change the sticker typeface also and use Helvetica Neue in my poster also.

Promotional advertisement

I have decided that instead of making something that would stand  up in a shop or hang from a window, I am going to make a big poster than could be displayed anywhere in streets, shops and even bus stop advert slots. I have started designs, using the drawings that I have used in the A5 flyer, I am using the same drawing as I think it would be more beneficial to use this then people would start to recognize where this drawing belongs to and what it represents.

Just a stage in the development of my poster.

Here is my final poster. I am really happy with the outcome. I think that it works really well and the colour scheme of the bra sets works well and compliments each other. I am going to go back to it and double check little things on how I can improve this.

Here is my 2nd draft of my poster. I like this one a lot more. I have changed the colours of each letter in the word confidence because I think that in this poster, it is the most important word here and that is what people will look at first. I am really pleased with the final outcome of this as I think that it portrays the message well and links perfectly with the rest of the POS kit that I have made.

As a little extra to push this futher I am going to place this poster into advertising slots within the public. For example, on bus stops, train stations and the ladies restroom. I think there is a variety of places where this could be put to have another use, rather than just in the Triumph stores.

Tent card.

I was looking for inspiration online for tent cards and I came across an advert from Wonder bra.

This advert in a magazine is to show what a good bra can do to a woman's cleavage, I think that from this I can come up with an idea that can show what a well fitting bra can do to a womans cleavage. Making it more comfortable and attractive.

------------------------------

An idea that I had for the tent card is to make it all about confidence, every woman wants confidence!
So I thought of using a line of text on the front of the the tent card, along the lines of:
'Just by wearing a bra that fits, can do this...'
and then on the other side of the tent card is a smile or a happy face. When doing this I tohught of the advert on TV that is for surgery, where people for example have a boob job, and holding a card in front of her breasts, with the card saying, 'but people notice the smile on my face'
I think that this is really nice touch, I also think that it doesn't show anything. I didn't want to use images of ladies in bras for this campaign because that is what Triumph already use so I thought going in a different direction would be a good change.

This here is a rough start to my A5 tent card. I have tried to keep the same typeface as Triumph or as close as I could get. I think keeping this plain, or making it red could work really well. People would want to look on the other side.

The smile image used here is from:

The idea and concept that I thought of with this design I thought would work really well. But looking at this now I think that it looks more like a toothpaste advert. I like the headline that I have used, I think that it works well as it does boost a woman's confidence to wear a bra that fits well and makes a cleavage. I just think that the smile image isn't working. If I am going to use this idea I need to come up with an idea that is going to look more like an idea for a bra fitting service.

After doing this I have come to the decision that I am not going to make a tent card for a part of the piece of communication. Instead I am going to make a poster that could go up in a shop, or even around town to communicate the importance of a fitted bra. I think that this would be a better way of communication, but also a better way of getting it onto the streets.

Stickers/Swing ticket

Now I am going to show the designs that I have come up with for my sticker or swing ticket. I haven't decided what would be better in this instance as I need to experiment. By looking at other stickers on bras in shop, it usually has something along the lines of 'matching briefs available' 'feel me' or 'look at my back!' I think that having a sticker it would need to be quite small and get the message over straight away, making it noticeable though.

The two ideas above that I have made are made with a combination of both Photoshop and InDesign. I used Photoshop to get the image the way I wanted eg. opacity. Then I trasnfered the image into InDesign, this is where I put all the text in. I did this in InDesign because of the features where it tells me where things line up and the gaps and spaces between everything.

This is the text I have decided to settle on. I think that it worked well with communicating the message that I need to. I think that if this sticker was put on to a garment, it would make people look. Buying bras is expensive so having the knowledge that you can get a FREE bra fitting, then it would be beneficial to get it done to save money in the long run.
This is the sticker I have chosen as my final. I think that it work perfectly with getting the message across. The placement for this would be on the front of the bra, the best place to catch a lady's eye when looking at the bra. I did this once and I found that the text was way too small, here is the one I discarded to make the text bigger:

I do think that I made the right decision here to change a few things, like moving the text a small bit and just making it all bigger and easier to read.

I have been able to find the right typeface. so what I have done next is just change all the type to Helvetica Neue - UltraLight.

Triumph and research

Task.

  • A4/A3 tent cards for till and display counters
  • Product swing tickets/garment stickers - for over the neck of the hanger or stickers for on the actual garment
  • Floor free standing display option
  • promotional flyers - A5 handouts for stores

Research

For my research first of all I have found out the stocklists that have Triumph bras. The ones closest to where I live are Fenwicks, Beales, House of Fraser and John Lewis.
I think that it would be benificial for me to go to any of these stores and look at the way that they have been ticketed and the free standing adverts that they have around store. Also while I am in the stores in the lingerie departments, I also think it would be a good idea for me to look into other brands of underwear, that have the same kind of quality as Triumph. In doing this I think that I will get a good understanding of how the companies advertise, because there is a lot of lingerie companies, and they all want to do the same thing.
I am going to ask for permission to take photos of the tickets if there is any other form of advertising for 'bra fitting'. I know that Marks and Spencer do a bra fitting service, so I think that by going in there and asking sales assistants what a selection of questions about how important they think the importance of a bra fitting.

-----------------------

whilst I was at work at the weekend I walked past a poster that was on the outside of Fenwicks in Tunbridge wells where I work. It was a poster for Valentines day. It caught my attention because of the simple design and silhouette the London skyline.

From looking at this I believe that the font that is Gill Sans. I have used this before in pieces of work and this is why it caught my attention. I would like to have this type of style on my work with this project, I think this poster links well to my project because of the 'love' theme. Although I won't necessarily use a Valentines theme for my bra advertisements, I think it has a good colour scheme that already links well to the Triumph brand. Red and White.

Whilst in Cambridge this week I was just shopping and came across a Triumph shop. I went in and asked the shop assisant if I could take a few photos of their swing tickets on their garments. She wasn't so keen on the idea, but allowed me to do it in the end only by not getting the actual bra in the photo. I got these two different swing tickets that Triumph already use as swing tickets:

Looking at these swing tickets I think that I would like to use some inspiration from their designs. I think that this has been made well and for all my pieces on their project I would like to keep the theme quite personal and more illustrative.
The shape sensation swing ticket I like better and relates well to a few design ideas that I have had.

Whilst in the shop I picked up this handout they had beside the till. Looking at this, this is the type of leaflet I need to design as my promotional flyer or tent card or both! I think that this one is effective but not as exciting as it could be, so I would like to push this further to make people look, this will obviously be pushed towards to bra fitting service.

I have looked at the Triumph Facebook page and looked through some of their campaigns that they have online. Here is one that I think is effective.

Chosen brief

After going through and analysising 5 briefs, I have decided to go forward with the Triumph brief. I think that I can relate to this brief the most out of all of the others. I think that I will be able to create something with more passion with this brief as I understand the importance of what they are trying to advertise.

Next step..

What I am going to do now to make my start with this project is look into the company in depth. Find out relevant history of the company and also look at current advertisements that Triumph use.

Maslow's pyramid theory

The Maslow pyramid describes physical and psychological needs. It starts at the lowest level of basic needs, things to stay alive such as air, food, water and sleep. As the pyramid goes up it becomes needs like safety (having shelter, heat and somewhere to be) and then belonging (within a group or family, feeling loved and having affection). The next step up would be esteem ( having self-esteem and having esteem from others). The top of the pyramid is self-actualisation (having personal, challenging goals and achieving control over your own life).

Advertisers use this as a way of making their money. They will tell people that things are a 'need' rather than a 'want' which is usually is. The needs in the pyramid I think go up to the belonging section. Belonging and below is what any one person will need to be happy and settled with life, feeling safe and sound. Anything above this will be products that people would want, to make them look good or feel extra special about themselves.
An example of these are car advertisers. Within their adverts they will focus on parts of the car that have been proven to be the smallest percentage better than another brand. A lot of advertisers will use the safety features of the car as their biggest selling point. Most of the time they will direct these at parents. They will tell you parents want the safest car for their family. Not only want, but 'need' the safest car.
On the other side of this example you have other car advertisers would use the esteem part of the pyramid for their adverts. They are sold on the apperance, performance or technology. The way that you would feel good and look good in one of these cars is what they would sell this on.

I have seem some adverts that I can relate back to the Maslow pyramid. Here I am going to document those adverts and explain in what section of the pyramid that it fall in to, and why I believe the advertiser has used this.

The first advert that I looked into was Heinz tomato ketchup. I wanted to look for a print advert first with some text on. I found this and thought that this advertisment has defiently been design with the pyramid in mind.

This advert here, a vintage Chanel advert, I think was interesting because even though this advert was made and designed a long time ago, the advertising was still the same way in a way how they portray the 'need' and 'want'. I believe that this advert would fall into the esteem section of the pyramid. Having this perfume isn't a need, but a 'want' to make a woman feel more feminine and more attractive to males. As you can see from this print ad, the woman is quite clearly the main focus to these men, because she is obvisously very pretty, but with the added extra of the Chanel no. 5 perfume making her all that matters to the men surrounding her. Making other woman believe, this is what wearing this perfume would do if you wore it. 'Every woman alive loves Chanel No. 5'

-----------------

This BMW advert is also based on esteem. When you first look at the advert the first thing you see is the car, then my eye went to the text along the top saying 'You can describe anything. Except driving pleasure.' This advert is not based on anything such as safety features within a car, or ,how much money you will save if you buy this car', like a lot of car adverts do have, such as this one here:

This screen shot I have done here is from the Peugeot website. Here their advertising is quite clearly selling this car on the basis of that you only need to 'just add fuel' so there is no worries of having this car, if you have any problems, Peugeot will sort this out, without extra costs, which, with the financial state everyone is in, this is what customers would be looking for with buying a new car, so from the Maslow pyramid theory, I would say that this advert is from the safety section, you would need this car to feel financially stable enough to be able to have a new car.

-----------------

This Innocent smoothie print advert is showing the health of the drinks and veg pots that they produce. They are clearly showing the amount of portions of your fruit and veg are in each. These days parents and adults are very concious about the amount of goodness they are putting into theirs and their childrens body and innocent have made all their products about this, hitting every home in the country. With this I would put these advertisments in the physiological section of health, sleep and air.

-----------------

This advert here I have used Mercedes-Benz. The car here they are advertising is the Mercedes C-Class coupe. The voice over they have used is 'you can't fit 125 years of innovation into a commercial, but you can find it all in the new Mercedes C-Class Coupe'. No where in that bit of voice over they have mentioned any reason for you to buy this car, like safety features or anything slightly better on fuel or insurance costs. This car is purely for those who can afford a car like this, if they wanted to, through no reason but to look good. Even in the television advert here, they lights pointing down on to the car make the car look luxurious, beautiful and people would star with envy.

The song that they have used for this advert is Belleruche - Northern Girls.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYQzSIqWUH4
The music put onto the advertisement I think makes quite a bit of difference, making the car seem calm and luxury with a calm song such as this.
